Palazzo Comunale
The Palazzo Comunale is the epitome of elegance and power in Siena. Located to one side of the Piazza del Campo, its importance as a political centre stretches over centuries.
Built in the first years of the 14th century, Palazzo Comunale was originally the seat of the Governo dei Nove (Government of Nine) of the city of Siena. Unlike other buildings constructed in this period, the Palazzo Comunale was built with bricks not stone and decorated with marble plates. The opulence of this structure is continued in its facade where embellishments, Gothic arches, columns and coats of arms cover every inch of space.
The Palazzo Comunale is today home to the Civic Museum but its refined roots remain as a symbol of the ancient significance of Siena and the important place the government held in the lives of the people who once filled this city.
