Baptistery of San Giovanni
Baptistery of San Giovanni
The Baptistery of San Giovanni rises in Siena’s famous city centre. Neighbour to the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Baptistery is located in one of the most symbolic locations in all of Tuscany.
The Baptistery of San Giovani was built between 1316 and 1325 and was designed by Caimano di Crescentino. The facade is inspired by the Gothic style of the time and its interior is a beautiful testament to the artistic patronage that was present in Siena in the 14th century.
The Baptistery is home to some incredible works including a hexagonal baptismal built in the first half of the 15th century out of marble, bronze and enamel. The walls of the baptistery are, on the other hand, covered in alfresco pieces by some of the most famous 15th century artists from Vecchietta (Francesco di Giorgio e di Lorenzo) to Benvenuto di Giovanni, both of which came from the same school as Jacopo della Quercia.
